What are the main clinical manifestations of growth hormone deficiency?

Wednesday 12th December 2018 Back to list

Idiopathic growth hormone deficiency is more common in boys, male: female 3:1. The length and weight of the children were normal at birth. After one year of age, the growth rate slowed down. Height lag was more significant than low body weight. The height of healthy children of the same age and sex was below the third percentile of growth curve (or below the average by two standard deviations), the annual growth rate of height was less than 5 cm, and the intelligence development was normal. The child's skull was round, his face was childish, his face was chubby, his skin was delicate, his hair was slender, his mandible and chin were poorly developed, his teeth erupted delayed and arranged irregularly. Although the growth of the children is backward, the proportions of all parts of the body are proportionate, which is consistent with their actual age. The development of skeleton is backward, and the age of bone lags behind the actual age of 2 years or older, but similar to its height and age, the epiphyseal fusion is late. Most puberty is delayed.
Some children with growth hormone deficiency are accompanied by one or more other pituitary hormone deficiencies. In addition to growth retardation, these children also have other accompanying symptoms: those with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) deficiency are prone to hypoglycemia; those with thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) deficiency have mild thyroid insufficiency symptoms, such as inappetence and less activity; and those with gonadotropin are prone to hypoglycemia. In hormone deficient patients, gonadal dysplasia, small penis, and no development of sexual organs and secondary sexual characteristics were observed until puberty.

Organic growth hormone deficiency can occur at any age, which is caused by abnormal perinatal conditions, often accompanied by diabetes insipidus. Intracranial tumors often have symptoms and signs of increased intracranial pressure such as headache, vomiting, visual field defect, and oppression of optic nerve.
